Patient Preferences for Dialysis Treatment Choices Using a Questionnaire Comparing Home Dialysis with Financial Support Versus In-Center Dialysis

Researchers are studying factors that influence patients choices between home dialysis and in-center hemodialysis for end-stage chronic renal failure. The study focuses on whether financial compensation, specifically a third-person compensatory allowance DTP available in France for home dialysis patients, affects the decision to choose home-based treatment. This observational research is conducted by University Hospital, Caen, and aims to explore how socioeconomic factors and financial support influence dialysis preferences. Participants will complete a questionnaire that includes sociodemographic questions and a series of 13 discrete choice experiments where they choose between different dialysis options. The two main options compared are home dialysis peritoneal dialysis or home hemodialysis with financial compensation DTP and in-center hemodialysis without compensation. The study examines patient preferences under these varying conditions. During the study enrollment, participants preference coefficients for dialysis treatment attributes, including the monthly financial allowance, will be measured through their questionnaire responses. The involvement is limited to completing this questionnaire once at enrollment. The research aims to assess how financial incentives may impact dialysis treatment choice, without involving any treatment administration or clinical interventions. The study started in December 2025 and will continue through December 2027.
