What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying Veterans who have recently left prison and have mental illness and/or substance use disorders. The study aims to create and test a program to help these Veterans successfully transition back into the community. It involves understanding their experiences with stigma and challenges during reentry to improve support services. The study has three phases. First, it collects information from Veterans about their transition experiences and difficulties. Next, it develops a reentry program called START-VET based on these findings and creates tools to assess progress. Finally, a pilot study will randomly assign Veterans to either receive the START-VET program or continue with usual care to compare outcomes. During participation, Veterans will complete assessments every 4 weeks for 16 weeks, including symptom inventories and quality of life measures. Researchers will monitor changes in mental health symptoms, quality of life, and criminal thinking styles. The study is designed to evaluate how the new program supports Veterans after prison and improve their reintegration experience.
