Comparing Telepharmacy and In-Person Pharmaceutical Care for Elderly Patients With Uncontrolled Hypertension

Researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of a pharmaceutical care protocol delivered via teleconsultation compared to in-person pharmaceutical care in managing uncontrolled hypertension in elderly patients. This study aims to understand how well telepharmacy supports clinical outcomes and treatment adherence for older adults with high blood pressure. It also explores patient satisfaction and the clinical impact of pharmacist interventions. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either pharmaceutical care through telepharmacy or traditional in-person care. The study involves four visits two visits for initial and final assessments of clinical parameters and application of instruments, conducted in a pharmacy setting by trained pharmacists and students and two visits for pharmaceutical consultations, which will be either teleconsultations or face-to-face sessions, depending on group assignment. During the study, researchers will measure blood pressure control, medication adherence, patient satisfaction, and the clinical significance of pharmacist interventions over a three-month period. Participants will have their blood pressure measured using a standardized protocol, and their treatment adherence and satisfaction will be evaluated. The study is sponsored by the Federal University of Bahia and is expected to complete by March 2026.
