What this Trial Is About
Researchers are exploring new ways to improve tactile aids for people who are blind or have low vision. Traditional tactile aids, made from physical bumps and textures, are limited in how much detailed information they can convey because too many features can become confusing. This study aims to use special materials chemistry to create richer tactile sensations that may help users identify objects more quickly and accurately compared to traditional tactile aids. The study involves designing and testing new tactile aids made with special coatings and materials such as silanes and polymers, applied to objects like mathematical plots, board games, and simulated money. Researchers will compare these enhanced tactile aids against traditional ones made only with bumps. They will also investigate the best size and spacing of bumps to maximize the amount of information that can fit on a tactile aid, and how adding designer materials can improve these bumps. Participants who are blind or visually impaired and regularly use tactile aids will take part in testing these new materials and aids. They will complete tasks like identifying tactile numeric plots of economic data, playing board games, and counting fake money while researchers measure accuracy, speed, and usability. The study includes various assessments during and after testing, with feedback collected through the study's duration, which lasts up to four years.

Your Study Journey
Duration - 2 to 4 weeks
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.
Participants must be blind or visually impaired for more than 10 years, regularly use tactile aids, have basic understanding of mathematical plots, and be 16 years or older. Participants with hand use impairments are excluded.
Duration - Up to 4 years
Participants engage in a series of tactile perception tests using experimental tactile aids and designer materials to evaluate their ability to identify tactile features and interpret tactile numeric plots, board games, and simulated money.
Multiple testing sessions over the study period, with assessments occurring immediately after human testing phases around years 2, 3, and 4.
