What this Trial Is About

This research aims to find out if using video explanations can help patients better understand diabetic eye disease and improve their follow-up rates at the eye clinic. The study focuses on patients with diabetes, with or without diabetic retinopathy, who attend Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital's eye clinic. Understanding diagnoses and treatment plans is important for vision outcomes, and this study seeks to enhance that understanding through new methods. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group will watch animated videos in English or Spanish explaining diabetic retinopathy, while the other group will receive usual care with no video intervention. These videos are designed to improve knowledge about the condition. The study will last 12 months, during which patient knowledge and follow-up adherence will be assessed. During the study, participants' understanding and satisfaction will be measured through digital surveys. Researchers will also review electronic health records to track follow-up visits and any progression of diabetic retinopathy over twelve months. The study will monitor changes in knowledge and care adherence to see if the video tool offers benefits for patients managing diabetic eye conditions.
