Virtual Reality Simulation Training for Childbirth- a Cluster Randomised Crossover Study

Researchers are evaluating a virtual reality simulator designed for normal vaginal delivery training compared to a traditional mannequin-based simulation. This cluster randomized crossover study involves Year 4 medical students during their Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship. The study aims to compare knowledge improvement and gather feedback on both simulation methods, addressing limitations of mannequin availability and training opportunities in labor wards. Participants will experience two training methods: an in-house developed immersive virtual reality simulation using the Oculus Quest 2 headset and a legacy PROMPT Flex mannequin-based simulator. The study includes a crossover design allowing comparison of participant feedback and preferences between the two modalities. The training sessions and assessments occur within a four-hour involvement period. During the study, participants complete an 11-item knowledge questionnaire before and after each simulation to measure percentage improvement in scores. They also fill out a six-domain feedback questionnaire to assess their experience with each simulation type. Statistical analyses will compare knowledge gains and feedback scores between the modalities. Ethical approval and waiver of consent have been obtained, and participation involves a brief, focused training and evaluation session.
