What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying people living with HIV (PLWH) who have cardiometabolic disorders such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, or type 2 diabetes. The study aims to identify social factors that affect cardiometabolic health, assess PLWH's knowledge and confidence in managing these disorders, and develop a tailored self-management support and education program based on stakeholder input. This research focuses on improving treatment goals for cardiometabolic disorders in PLWH in the southeastern United States. The study includes three parts. First, 20 PLWH aged 35 and older will participate in in-depth interviews using photographs to explore social influences on their cardiometabolic health. Second, 120 PLWH with similar criteria will complete a survey measuring their patient activation, which reflects their skills and confidence in self-managing their conditions. Third, key stakeholders including healthcare providers and PLWH will collaborate over three months to adapt an existing self-management education intervention to better fit the needs of this population. Participants will engage in activities such as telephone visits for consent and surveys, photography training, and interviews. Researchers will measure social determinants identified from interviews, patient engagement via surveys, and the number of modified strategies in the tailored intervention. The study includes meetings with stakeholders to finalize the intervention and aims to prepare for future research evaluating its acceptability and effectiveness.
