What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying the relationships among alcohol use, sexual risk behavior, sexual aggression, and emotional factors in young men who have sex with women. This study focuses on men's resistance to using condoms with female partners who want protected sex, a common behavior with significant concern when coercive tactics are involved. The research aims to understand how emotional and alcohol-related factors influence sexual risk intentions and behaviors in both lab and real-world settings. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either an alcoholic beverage containing vodka mixed with fruit juice or a similar nonalcoholic fruit juice drink. They also experience experimental tasks designed to evoke either negative or positive emotions in a hypothetical sexual partner. These manipulations help assess the impact of partner emotions on participants' sexual risk behaviors and intentions. The alcoholic beverage is dosed to achieve a peak breath alcohol concentration of .08%. During the study, participants' sexual risk intentions are measured within one hour of receiving the interventions, and their sexual risk behavior is tracked over six months. The researchers collect data on participants' own and their partner's emotions after the laboratory tasks to compare lab responses with real-world behaviors. The study involves male participants aged 21 to 30 who have recent sexual and alcohol use histories, with monitoring spanning immediate and longer-term outcomes.
