What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating the characteristics of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, a condition that typically begins around 10 to 11 years of age and progresses until skeletal maturity or adulthood in severe cases. The study aims to better understand the mechanical properties of the intervertebral disc in children with and without scoliosis, using a non-invasive and non-irradiating approach. This research focuses on measuring diffusion parameters in the discs, which have not been previously studied in this young population. Participants will undergo magnetic resonance imaging MRI of the lumbar or spinal regions, with the imaging sequence lasting between 2 and 10 minutes longer than a standard MRI exam. The study includes two groups children diagnosed with scoliosis characterized by a clinical hump and a spinal deformity greater than 10 degrees, and children without scoliosis who have no hump and are able to walk. The research will compare diffusion measurements between these groups. During the trial, children will have MRI scans performed as part of their routine care, with assessments occurring between Day 15 and Day 90 after enrollment. Researchers will measure the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient ADC values in the discs and analyze differences between scoliosis and non-scoliosis patients. Additional evaluations include correlations between ADC values on both sides of the spine and vertebral inclination in scoliosis patients, as well as other MRI-based measurements. Participation involves non-invasive imaging and no additional treatment, with the study expected to complete by April 2028.
