What this Trial Is About
This research investigates Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome ARDS, a serious lung condition common in intensive care units that causes low oxygen levels and lung swelling. The study focuses on understanding the different biological types of ARDS caused by various triggers like COVID-19, other viral or bacterial pneumonia, and non-lung-related causes. It aims to identify specific disease patterns by combining detailed lung fluid analysis and advanced imaging techniques. Participants will undergo bronchoalveolar lavage, where lung fluid is collected using a saline solution, and blood samples are taken repeatedly from day 1 and weekly until discharge or withdrawal. The study groups include patients with COVID-19 ARDS, pneumonia-induced ARDS, severe pneumonia without ARDS, non-pulmonary ARDS, and those without lung disease. Researchers will analyze lung microbes, immune responses, and blood clotting markers over a period of up to four years. During the study, participants will have regular sampling of lung fluid and blood to examine microbiome composition, metabolomic profiles, and inflammatory markers. Imaging data from chest CT scans will also be integrated with these biological measurements. The goal is to identify ARDS subtypes and better understand the disease mechanisms. Participants progress will be monitored over several years, with continuous data collection to support these detailed analyses.
