Community Study to Monitor Disability Risk and Aging in Older Adults in Beijing

Researchers are conducting a community-based prospective cohort study in Beijing, China, focusing on older adults aged 60 years and above. The study began in 2023 and aims to develop standards for disability risk assessment as well as an early warning model to help identify risks among the elderly population. This research addresses important issues related to aging, disability, cognitive decline, and movement disorders. Participants include older residents who have lived in their communities for over a year and have agreed to join the study. There is no intervention involved instead, the study involves observation and data collection to build a comprehensive community-based database. The research will proceed in three stages establishing the cohort and database, developing an intelligent disability risk assessment model, and creating procedures based on this model. During the study, researchers will monitor participants through surveys assessing the prevalence and incidence of functional disability, mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and movement disorders over an average period of 1 to 2 years. They will also examine genetic and environmental factors and biomarkers related to cognitive decline. Participants will be observed for changes in cognitive status, and the study will generate important data to support early detection and risk management. The study is expected to continue long term, with ongoing follow-up and analysis.
