Barts Health Cardio-Renal Registry to Study Outcomes in Patients with Kidney and Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of illness and death among people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The risk of heart problems, including coronary artery disease (CAD), rises as kidney function worsens. Despite their high risk, patients with CKD and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) often receive less guideline-based treatment and fewer referrals for heart procedures, partly due to concerns about side effects and kidney damage. This research aims to better understand the characteristics and outcomes of patients with both heart and kidney disease, improving risk assessment and diagnosis. This observational study monitors patients with renal and cardiac diseases in a real-world setting to evaluate the safety and feasibility of further investigations. Patients are included automatically in a database without the need for informed consent, focusing on those aged 16 years and older who are reviewed by the nephrology team. The study does not involve administering treatments but observes patient outcomes and medical care. Participants will be tracked for key outcomes including mortality, hospital readmissions, major adverse cardiac events, and major adverse kidney events at 30 days and one year. Data collection includes reviewing patient records and outcomes to identify predictors of these events. The study aims to provide important information that can help improve care strategies for patients with combined heart and kidney disease over time.
