Study of Positive Activities to Support Asian American Cancer Patients and Their Caregivers Using Household and Community Contributions to Improve Well-Being

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating new positive activity interventions designed specifically for Asian American cancer patients to help reduce the burden they may feel on their caregivers. The study aims to increase feelings of autonomy, competence, and connectedness, which are linked to psychological benefits. This is the first randomized controlled trial assessing these culturally tailored activities based on self-determination theory and collectivist culture concepts. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The experimental group will engage in positive activities contributing to caregiver well-being through household tasks, such as cooking or watering plants, or contribute outside the home, like picking up litter or donating items. The control group will be asked to factually describe their immediate environment, weather, or closet organization. These activities are designed to test the feasibility and impact of these interventions over a structured period. Participants will be assessed at multiple time points before the intervention, midway at 2 weeks, immediately after 4 weeks, and at an 8-week follow-up. Researchers will measure psychological outcomes using tools like the Affect-Adjective Scale and PROMIS Global Health, along with assessments of psychological needs and perceived burden. Throughout the study, participants will complete questionnaires and activities to track changes in mood, well-being, and caregiver relationships.
