What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating ways to improve radiotherapy treatment for kidney tumors, specifically renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The study aims to determine if new imaging techniques can help target kidney cancer more accurately during radiation, potentially leading to better treatment results. The research involves comparing standard motion management with novel methods to reduce radiation exposure to healthy kidney tissue. A total of 40 patients with RCC will receive stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The first 15 patients will undergo additional breath-hold cone beam CT (CBCT) scans during treatment to assess movement uncertainties and explore the use of surface guidance to track tumor position. The next 25 patients will be treated using a new motion management technique developed from the earlier imaging data, combining breath-hold or gating with surface guidance to maintain a stable tumor position and minimize treatment margins. Participants will have planning CT scans on day 1 to develop treatment plans using both standard and new motion management approaches. During treatment, they will receive CBCT scans at each radiation session, which occurs about three times a week starting around day 14. Follow-up assessments, including photon-counting CT scans, will be done at 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment to measure changes in tumor characteristics. The main outcome is to reduce radiation dose to the kidney while monitoring treatment effectiveness and safety over time.
