Training College Health Center Providers to Support Trans and Gender Diverse Students and Reduce Sexual Violence and Heavy Drinking

What this Trial Is About

This research aims to improve support for transgender and gender diverse TGD college students who face higher risks of sexual violence and heavy drinking. It evaluates a specialized training program designed for college health and counseling center CHC providers to enhance their knowledge, confidence, and use of trans-inclusive practices. The trial is a pilot cluster-randomized study embedded within a larger project addressing alcohol-involved sexual violence in higher education. The study compares two training approaches for CHC staff and clinicians one group receives the Giving Information for Trauma Support and Safety GIFTSS training focused on sexual violence prevention and intervention, while the experimental group receives GIFTSS combined with CAREs trans learning modules. The CARE training is an asynchronous e-learning program aimed at improving providers skills in delivering affirming care to TGD students. The intervention is delivered at 15 randomized CHC sites. Participants, who are CHC providers working with undergraduate students, will complete training and provide feedback immediately afterward on the feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness, and usability of the CARE intervention. The study also tracks changes in providers knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and use of trans-inclusive practices at baseline and six months after training. The study is sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh and includes follow-up assessments to evaluate the trainings impact over time.
