Study of Chinese Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy to Identify New Genes and Improve Sudden Cardiac Death Risk Prediction

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy HCM is a common inherited heart condition affecting about 0.2% of the population. It can lead to serious problems like sudden cardiac death, heart failure, and stroke. While many cases are linked to gene mutations affecting heart muscle proteins, the exact causes and pathways leading to heart thickening are not fully understood. Current risk assessment guidelines for sudden cardiac death have mostly been developed from studies in Western populations, and their accuracy for Chinese patients has not yet been evaluated. This study recruits patients diagnosed with HCM based on specific heart wall thickness measurements from echocardiography or MRI, including those with a family history. Researchers will collect detailed baseline data such as physical exams, blood and urine tests, heart monitoring with ECG and Holter, echocardiography, and MRI. Blood and heart tissue samples from surgery patients will be used for advanced analyses to explore genetic and molecular factors contributing to HCM. The study will also assess the accuracy of existing sudden cardiac death risk guidelines and develop new predictive models tailored to Chinese patients. Participants will be followed for an average of 2 years to monitor outcomes like cardiovascular deaths, overall mortality, heart failure, stroke, and dangerous heart rhythms. The study involves regular clinical evaluations and laboratory tests to track health status and disease progression. The collected data and biological samples will help identify novel risk factors and potential treatment targets, aiming to improve prediction and management of HCM in the Chinese population.
