What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination in healthcare workers and hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The study includes a total of 5,000 healthcare workers and 500 COVID-19 patients enrolled at Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. It aims to understand antibody and cellular immune responses over time to SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses like Influenza A/B and RSV. Participants undergo regular follow-ups every four months, where blood and mucosal samples (saliva and nasal secretions) are collected. Sub-studies include more frequent sampling and PCR testing for respiratory infections regardless of symptoms. Data on infection and vaccination history are gathered from national registries, and participants provide clinical and demographic information via a smartphone app. Throughout the study, researchers measure antibody and cellular immune responses, detect viral infections using PCR, and evaluate the mucosal microbiome. Samples are stored in a biobank for future analysis. Participants are monitored until 2027, with ongoing data collection and occasional PCR screenings to track infections and vaccine responses.
