Dulce Digital 2.0 Comparing Digital and In-Person Diabetes Self-Management Education for Hispanic Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Researchers are evaluating two digital health adaptations of Project Dulce aimed at improving digital health literacy and self-management among underserved HispanicLatino adults with type 2 diabetes. The study compares the effectiveness of traditional in-person education, live telehealth group education, and a text-based messaging program to help participants better manage their diabetes and access vital health information. This research addresses health disparities by expanding access to care for populations facing challenges such as low socioeconomic status, limited health literacy, and barriers to technology use. Participants will be assigned to one of three groups a text-based diabetes self-management education and support program providing ongoing motivational and educational messages for 6 months a live peer-led telehealth group education program delivered over 5 weeks covering diabetes management topics or a live peer-led in-person group education program with the same 5-week curriculum. The telehealth and in-person programs include peer support and focus on skills like diet, exercise, medication use, and self-monitoring. During the study, participants will be monitored for changes in their HbA1c levels at 3 and 6 months to assess blood sugar control. Secondary measures include diabetes distress and treatment satisfaction at the same timepoints. The study involves regular assessments of clinical and behavioral outcomes, with researchers tracking engagement and effectiveness of each education method. The entire participation period covers at least 6 months, focusing on improving diabetes self-management and digital health skills in this population.
