Study of Connected and Disconnected Consciousness Episodes in Adults After Critical Illness and Prolonged ICU Stay

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying the occurrence of episodes of connected and disconnected consciousness, including near-death and out-of-body experiences, in patients who survived at least 7 days in the intensive care unit ICU and experienced coma. This observational study also explores risk factors related to these episodes and the long-term psychological effects six months after ICU discharge. The research is led by the University of Liege. The study involves using diagnostic tools such as the Near-Death Experience Content NDE-C scale, a questionnaire designed to detect near-death experiences, and a threat perception scale to assess psychological vulnerability during the ICU stay. Participants will also take part in interviews to recall any dreams, hallucinations, or unusual experiences, as well as memories of the ICU environment, medical staff, and family visits. Participants will be assessed within one week after leaving the ICU to detect episodes of connected or disconnected consciousness and evaluate psychological vulnerability. A follow-up at six months will explore the lasting psychological impact of the ICU stay. The study focuses on careful observation and interviews to gather data about consciousness episodes, risk factors, and mental health outcomes after critical illness.
