What this Trial Is About
This research aims to assess the ability of nurses to screen for depressive symptoms in adults undergoing in-center hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease. Patients on hemodialysis face many physical and social challenges, including fatigue and frequent health issues, which contribute to a high rate of depression. Despite its impact on quality of life and health outcomes, depression often goes underdiagnosed in this group due to the difficulty of conducting standard psychiatric interviews in dialysis centers. The study evaluates nurses structured hetero-assessment of depressive symptoms using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale depression subscale HADS-D, comparing it to patients self-assessments. The only intervention involves informing the patients physician if a nurses assessment indicates significant depression symptoms HADS-D score 8, prompting further clinical evaluation and management according to each centers procedures. This approach aims to improve depression screening and integrate mental health care into dialysis management. Participants will undergo parallel and independent assessments by nurses and themselves during routine hemodialysis sessions. Researchers will measure how well the nursing assessments identify depressive symptoms from enrollment until the end of the intervention period, which lasts between one and two weeks. The study tracks diagnostic performance and supports better mental health screening within the dialysis care pathway over the course of the trial.
