What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying how chronic inflammation affects muscle function and how people with obesity respond to exercise. This observational study involves adults aged 20 to 45 years who are either lean or obese. The goal is to better understand muscle protein synthesis and gene responses related to exercise in these groups. Participants are divided into two groups based on body mass index (BMI): a lean group with BMI between 20 and 25 kg/m² and an obese group with BMI between 30 and 45 kg/m². Each participant completes an outpatient visit including body composition measurement, blood tests, a treadmill fitness test, and a strength test. They also have an inpatient visit involving muscle and fat biopsies, indirect calorimetry to measure resting energy use, and an exercise test. During the study, researchers collect data at baseline and about 8 hours after exercise to measure changes in muscle protein synthesis, gene expression, and activation of signaling proteins. Participants will undergo imaging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the upper leg to examine fat and muscle. The study carefully monitors physical fitness, muscle strength, and metabolic responses to exercise over the study period, which extends through July 2029.
