What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the safety and tolerability of glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists GLP1RA, specifically semaglutide, in people receiving maintenance dialysis who have type 2 diabetes. This pilot randomized controlled trial aims to assess adherence to treatment, recruitment feasibility, and follow-up completeness to determine if a larger cardiovascular outcome trial is possible in this population. The study focuses on patients who have been on maintenance dialysis for at least 90 days. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups one group will receive weekly subcutaneous injections of semaglutide, while the other will continue with usual care for their diabetes. For those undergoing in-center hemodialysis, the semaglutide injection may be given by nursing staff during dialysis sessions based on patient preference. The treatment and follow-up period lasts 26 weeks. Throughout the study, participants will be monitored for adherence to the medication, adverse events, cardiovascular outcomes, changes in weight, blood sugar control, insulin use, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, kidney-related bone disease markers, and quality of life. Researchers will track if at least 70% of prescribed doses are taken and if 90% of participants complete the study. The trial includes safety and effectiveness assessments over the 26-week period to help guide future research.
