What this Trial Is About

Falls are a common issue affecting older adults, especially those over 65 years old. Many older people take blood thinning medications for conditions like atrial fibrillation or heart disease, which can increase concerns about brain bleeding after a fall. Current guidelines recommend that older adults on these medications who have hit their head be assessed with a CT scan, even if they show no symptoms. However, this often leads to unnecessary hospital visits and admissions, which may cause harm such as reduced mobility, confusion, infections, or pressure sores. Researchers are studying how healthcare services in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight region support older people on blood thinners who have fallen and may have a head injury but show no symptoms. They are conducting an online survey of NHS healthcare professionals from various sectors to learn about their roles, assessment practices, challenges, and ideas for improvement in managing these patients. The study aims to understand current care pathways and how services work together to provide patient-centered care in preferred settings, which could reduce emergency visits and hospital admissions. Participants in this study are NHS healthcare workers with experience in reviewing older adults on blood thinners after falls. They will complete an online survey describing their work and challenges faced in caring for these patients. The researchers will collect information over 24 months on existing healthcare pathways and barriers experienced by professionals. This information will help improve healthcare services for older adults after falls, focusing on care outside the hospital environment.
