Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy: Cognitive, Emotional, Behavioral Functioning, and Quality of Life in Adolescents

Researchers are studying adolescents aged 11 to 17 with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) to understand their neurocognitive, emotional-behavioral functioning, and quality of life. The study focuses on identifying key factors that influence the well-being of these patients, considering that IGE can be linked with mood disorders, ADHD, learning disabilities, and negative social outcomes despite generally normal neurocognitive development. The trial aims to explore these aspects using standardized assessments over one year. Participants will undergo emotional and neuropsychological assessments. Emotional-behavioral functioning and quality of life questionnaires are completed by patients and their caregivers during regular follow-up visits, while cognitive evaluations are conducted by clinicians using standardized tests. The study evaluates various epilepsy syndromes within IGE, which may include absence, myoclonic, and tonic-clonic seizures, with treatment often involving medication management. Throughout the one-year period, participants' cognition will be measured with standardized intelligence scales appropriate for their age. Quality of life, behavioral profiles, and executive functioning will be assessed using validated questionnaires. Clinical and medical history information will also be gathered to analyze influences on emotional and executive functioning. The study carefully monitors these outcomes to better understand the impact of IGE on adolescents' overall health and daily functioning.
