Studying Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavioral Health in Adolescents with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy and Their Quality of Life

Researchers are studying adolescents aged 11 to 18 years with idiopathic generalized epilepsy IGE to understand their neurocognitive, emotional-behavioral functioning, and quality of life. The study aims to identify key factors that affect the overall well-being of these patients, considering that IGE can involve various seizure types and is often linked to mood disorders, ADHD, and learning difficulties. The research focuses on aspects beyond seizure control, such as psychological and social outcomes impacting health-related quality of life. Participants will undergo emotional and neuropsychological assessments during regular follow-up visits. Patients and their caregivers will complete standardized questionnaires about emotional-behavioral functioning and quality of life, while clinicians will conduct cognitive evaluations using standardized tools like the WISC IV and WAIS IV. This study is observational and does not involve drug treatments or interventions beyond assessments. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires and undergo cognitive tests over a one-year period. Researchers will collect clinical and background information to analyze how various factors relate to emotional and executive functioning. The main outcomes measured include cognition, quality of life, behavioral profile, and executive functioning using specific standardized questionnaires and scales. The study also explores the connection between neurodevelopmental comorbidities and quality of life.
