What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating the effects of dietary energy restriction and daily exercise on protein synthesis in prostate tumour and muscle tissue in men with prostate cancer. The study aims to understand how these lifestyle changes influence tumour growth and muscle mass, which are important for cancer treatment outcomes. The trial will compare protein synthesis rates under different conditions to evaluate potential supportive therapies alongside surgery. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups a dietary energy restriction group with 40% less food intake, a daily exercise group combining exercise and mild dietary restriction to reach the same energy deficit, and a control group maintaining usual diet and activity. All interventions last for 7 days before the participants undergo radical prostatectomy, during which tissue samples will be collected for analysis. During the study, participants will consume deuterium-labelled water to track protein synthesis. After 7 days, muscle and tumour tissue along with blood will be collected during surgery to measure protein synthesis rates. Researchers will monitor how these rates differ between groups to assess the impact of diet and exercise on tumour growth and muscle maintenance. The total participation time includes the 7-day intervention period leading up to surgery.
