What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying how personalized, tempo-synchronous music playlists called rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) affect exercise habits and enjoyment in community-dwelling, sedentary older adults aged 65 and above. The goal is to understand if RAS can improve adherence to physical activity guidelines and positive feelings toward exercise over an 8-month period. The study is led by Emory University and focuses on promoting physical activity in older adults through music-enhanced exercise programs. Participants will take part in a 6-month exercise program based on national physical activity guidelines, with gradual reduction of supervised sessions. They will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group exercises with RAS playlists to accompany their sessions, and the other group exercises without music. Both groups start with supervised aerobic and strength training sessions twice a week for three months, then reduce to once a week for the next three months while being encouraged to exercise independently. Behavioral support is provided throughout the intervention and the following 2-month follow-up. During the study, participants will wear hip activity trackers to measure weekly physical activity and respond to text-based surveys about their feelings toward exercise at multiple points. They will attend lab visits before and after the intervention for assessments including cognitive, vascular, and physical health, fitness, body measurements, and quality of life. Additional questionnaires and physical tests will be conducted to evaluate changes in exercise behavior, enjoyment, strength, balance, and other health aspects. The full study duration is about 8 months including follow-up.

1 screening and enrollment visit (in-person)
Duration - 6 months
Participants engage in a 6-month exercise program with supervised group exercise sessions that gradually reduce in frequency, encouraging independent strength and aerobic training. Behavioral supports are provided throughout the intervention to help participants set and track exercise goals.
Supervised exercise sessions 2 days/week for the first 3 months, then 1 day/week for the next 3 months; monthly assessments during intervention
Duration - 2 months
Participants are followed for 2 months after the intervention to assess ongoing physical activity and other outcomes through remote monitoring and questionnaires.
