What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how antibiotics used during the hospital stay for stem cell transplant (SCT) affect the balance of bacteria in the intestines. This study focuses on patients undergoing SCT for blood cancers or bone marrow failure, aiming to understand how antibiotic use may influence changes in gut bacteria and related transplant complications. Participants will provide stool samples at several time points: before conditioning treatment, on the day of stem cell infusion, between days 7 and 10 after transplant, during their first or second outpatient clinic visit after transplant, if they develop graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) grade I or higher, and when recovering from GVHD. The study will analyze these samples to assess changes in intestinal microbiota over time. Throughout the study, researchers will monitor changes in the microbiome up to six months after SCT. They will track how antibiotic use correlates with these changes and any transplant-related complications. Participants will be observed over this period to help understand the impact of antibiotics on transplant outcomes.
