Study of Different Types and Patterns of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Italian Adults Tracking Health Risks and Long-Term Outcomes with Sleep Study Data

Obstructive Sleep Apnea OSA is a common sleep-related breathing disorder linked to serious health risks including heart, brain, and metabolic diseases. It has a high prevalence and worsens if untreated, contributing to increased mortality even in mild cases. European studies have shown varied symptoms and complications across regions, but detailed data for the Italian population is lacking. This study aims to better understand OSA in Italy by assessing different physiological and clinical patterns, its association with other health conditions, and creating a long-term patient database. The study collects clinical, sleep study, and treatment data from patients suspected of having OSA at Italian Sleep Centers. A clinical questionnaire will standardize data collection, and a feasibility study on 100 patients will be conducted. Additional tests include EKG, spirometry, blood pressure monitoring, blood chemistry, and assessments of sleepiness, cognitive function, and anxietydepression. A web platform will securely store anonymous patient information. Participants will undergo polysomnography after enrollment to confirm OSA. Data will be collected on apnea-hypopnea index and oxygen saturation at enrollment. Researchers will analyze OSA severity, associated metabolic and cardiovascular risks, and different clinical patterns. The study will develop screening questionnaires and establish a registry for ongoing follow-up to support preventive health strategies in Italy. Participation duration varies, with data collected at enrollment and follow-up planned.
