What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) in patients with Total Hip Replacements (THR), a serious complication that can occur after this common surgery. The study focuses on patients treated at University Hospitals Leuven, where experienced doctors provide personalized, multidisciplinary care. Because PJI treatment varies greatly and randomized trials are difficult to conduct, this study collects detailed patient data to better understand treatment outcomes and improve care quality. Patients included in this observational study receive standard care for PJI according to established criteria. Treatments involve antibiotics or surgeries such as one-stage or two-stage procedures, along with imaging like X-rays and CT scans of the pelvis and hip. The study collects data prospectively on these patients to evaluate outcomes and support internal quality checks. During the study, researchers follow patients for up to five years, assessing infection clearance, complications, hospital stays, and quality of life using questionnaires like the EuroQol 5D-3L and hip disability scores. They also monitor readmissions and mortality. This long-term follow-up helps provide insights into treatment success rates, especially for rare infection types or specific patient groups, and supports ongoing improvements in care.
