Researchers are evaluating family engagement in intensive care units (ICUs) through a new tool called the FAMily Engagement (FAME) instrument. This observational cohort study aims to validate this tool and explore how family activation and engagement relate to important family-centered outcomes. The study will also consider how factors like age, relationship, gender, and race or ethnicity may affect family involvement in ICU care. The study will observe 198 family members from ICUs in four Canadian hospitals across three provinces over a 12-week period. These hospitals were selected to represent diverse urban settings with varied cultural, linguistic, and demographic backgrounds. Participants identified as family members have a biological, legal, or emotional connection to the patient and are involved in their care. Participants will be assessed using the FAME instrument within 24 hours of enrollment. Additional measures include family activation, mental health assessed within two weeks after hospital discharge, and satisfaction with care. Data will be collected through questionnaires in English or French. The study will monitor these outcomes to better understand how family engagement influences ICU experiences and outcomes, with the entire participation lasting around 12 weeks.
