A Long-Term Study of Chronic Diseases in Registered Nurses Working in Xiamen, China

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are conducting a prospective cohort study called the Nurse Cohort Study Xiamen NCSX to explore multiple factors affecting common chronic diseases among registered nurses in Xiamen, China. The study aims to examine genetic, biological, psychological, social, lifestyle, and environmental influences on diseases such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and some cancers. This research seeks to understand whether risk factors identified in Western societies apply to a population experiencing rapid lifestyle changes in China. The study will enroll about 10,000 registered nurses aged 20 years or older who work in public hospitals in Xiamen. There is no intervention in this observational study. Researchers will collect baseline data on major risk factors and follow participants over about five years to monitor the incidence and progression of chronic diseases, as well as mortality related to these conditions. Participants will be followed from 2019 through at least 2024, with health assessments and data collection during this period. Researchers will measure the incidence rates of chronic diseases and mortality outcomes. The study will analyze how different risk factors relate to disease development and progression. This long-term follow-up is intended to support disease prevention and health promotion among nurses and the local population.
