Nurse-Led Education, Counseling, and Support to Improve Self-Care and Quality of Life in Adults on Hemodialysis

This research aims to evaluate how nurse-led interventions affect self-care adherence and quality of life in adults undergoing hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease. Hemodialysis patients often face challenges like fluid and electrolyte imbalances, multiple symptoms, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, all of which can affect their quality of life. The study compares a nurse-led educational program combined with reminders and self-care booklets against usual care to assess improvements in patient adherence and well-being. Participants are divided into two groups one receives nurse-led interventions consisting of four laptop-based educational and counseling sessions spread over 7 to 8 weeks, weekly reminder calls on non-dialysis days, and a self-care booklet. The control group receives usual care including routine doctor rounds and advice. The intervention covers kidney function education, diet and fluid recommendations, physical activity guidance, and mental health strategies. Follow-up assessments occur at 4 and 6 months from baseline. During the study, participants undergo clinical evaluations including measurement of interdialytic weight gain, blood pressure, and body mass index from medical records. Self-care adherence is assessed through interviews using tailored questionnaires and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Quality of life is measured with the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire. Data are analyzed for differences between groups at baseline, 4 months, and 6 months. The study spans several months with ongoing monitoring of patient adherence and health outcomes.
