What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying the risk of opioid misuse among adult cancer patients who are receiving opioids for cancer-related pain. This study focuses on patients in Danish palliative care units and aims to understand how common opioid misuse risk is in this group. The study also explores links between opioid misuse risk and factors such as opioid consumption, use of short-acting opioids, tobacco and alcohol use, prior drug use, and physician reports. Additionally, it examines how opioid misuse risk relates to depression, anxiety, and quality of life. This is a prospective and cross-sectional observational study where opioid misuse is defined as using prescription opioids differently than prescribed, such as using them for reasons other than pain relief or using more than directed. The study uses tools like the Pain Medication Questionnaire (PMQ) and the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT) to assess misuse risk. Other assessments include questionnaires on depression and anxiety (PHQ-4) and quality of life (EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL). Data on opioid and benzodiazepine use, alcohol and tobacco consumption, and pain characteristics are also collected. Participants will be outpatients aged 18 or older who have cancer-related pain treated with opioids. They will complete questionnaires and assessments at baseline, and follow-up data on opioid misuse information from physicians will be collected one month later. The research measures include the PMQ and ORT scores, pain details, substance use, mental health status, and quality of life. The study does not involve treatment but focuses on collecting and analyzing data to understand opioid misuse risk in this patient population.
