What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating the physical and cognitive aging processes in older adults, focusing on Hispanic Americans who are rapidly growing in number and face higher risks of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The study aims to assess the feasibility of enrolling and retaining older adults in a long-term aging cohort and to explore how physical activity and function relate to cognitive health over time. This research contributes to understanding factors that may influence dementia risk. The study will recruit 100 adults aged 55 to 85, including 50 Hispanic American and 50 non-Hispanic American participants, with equal numbers of men and women. Participants will be evaluated at two initial visits that include cognitive screening using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), medical history, and assessments of physical fitness and activity. After one year, participants will be invited for follow-up visits repeating the same evaluations to monitor changes and trajectories in cognitive and physical health. Participants will undergo cognitive and physical assessments at the beginning and one-year follow-up visits, including questionnaires, physical fitness tests, and cognitive performance measures. The primary outcome is the rate of recruitment and retention over the one-year period. The study will also gather data on physical activity behaviors and cognitive status to understand their associations. The total participation involves two sets of visits spaced one year apart, with detailed monitoring of physical and cognitive aging indicators.
