What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating how point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is used in free clinics and street medicine settings for patients experiencing homelessness or without shelter. The study aims to understand how often POCUS is used during patient visits and how it influences medical decisions. This observational study focuses on patients receiving care in Indianapolis free clinics or from street medicine teams, reflecting the growing need for accessible healthcare among the unsheltered population. Participants will receive POCUS exams as part of their routine medical care based on their symptoms. These handheld ultrasound exams typically take 2 to 5 minutes and may include imaging of the chest, heart, abdomen, kidneys, blood vessels, soft tissues, muscles, eyes, or female reproductive organs. The study records the types of ultrasound performed, results found, and whether the ultrasound changed the patient's treatment. The research also notes barriers to using POCUS in resource-limited settings to help improve future care. During the study, researchers will collect information from the ultrasound encounters and follow participants for 30 days through medical record reviews or contact by phone or email. They will compare POCUS results with any formal ultrasound exams done within that time. The study measures how often POCUS is used, its impact on referrals and treatment changes, the time spent on exams, and the proportion of positive findings. Participation lasts about one year, allowing detailed tracking of clinical outcomes and ultrasound utility.
