What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying the time it takes for the stomach to empty in patients who have experienced relevant traumatic injuries. The study focuses on using repeated ultrasound scans of the stomach's lower part (gastric antrum) to assess its size and content over time. This observational study aims to gather information on factors that might affect delayed stomach emptying after trauma. Participants admitted to the emergency department with relevant traumatic injuries will have gastric ultrasounds performed every 2 hours, up to a maximum of five times, until they undergo surgery. The ultrasound procedure is a non-invasive imaging test done at the bedside (point-of-care ultrasound). The study also collects various demographic and patient-related data to understand what influences gastric emptying. During the study, participants will undergo serial gastric ultrasounds and assessments of pain levels, use of pain medications, and stress indicators every 2 hours. Researchers will evaluate the quality and quantity of gastric content via ultrasound. This monitoring continues until surgery or up to five examinations. The study keeps track of these measures to better understand gastric emptying delays in trauma patients.
