What this Trial Is About

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide, affecting millions including nearly two million Australians. Researchers aim to understand the causes of AMD, the differences in its types and severities, and how it progresses over time compared to healthy eyes. This observational study focuses on collecting detailed information about AMD’s characteristics, genetics, and patient experiences to better understand the disease. This study does not involve treatments but observes participants with AMD and those with normal age-related eye changes. It uses non-invasive eye imaging and functional tests to assess the retina, along with collecting biological samples and patient-reported outcomes. Participants include those with AMD and healthy controls, and the study will track AMD progression and associated factors over up to 20 years. Participants will undergo regular eye assessments, imaging, and provide biological samples during the study. Researchers will measure disease type, severity, genetic factors, and progression rates. The study also gathers patient feedback through questionnaires. This long-term follow-up will help identify how AMD develops and progresses, with all data collected under careful observation without intervention.
