What this Trial Is About

This research aims to evaluate how Saskatoon berry juice affects recovery from muscle damage caused by intense exercise. Saskatoon berries are rich in polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that might protect muscles after strenuous activity. The study will involve 30 healthy adults aged 18 to 35 years, randomized to receive either Saskatoon berry juice or a placebo. Participants will be assigned to one of two groups: one group will consume 375 ml of Saskatoon berry juice daily, while the other will receive a placebo of the same volume, for 10 days. On the seventh day, participants will perform six sets of intense biceps curl exercises to induce muscle damage. The study is triple-blinded and randomized to compare the effects of the juice versus placebo. Throughout the study, muscle strength, swelling, and soreness will be measured before exercise, immediately after, and at 24, 48, and 72 hours post-exercise. Muscle strength will be assessed using a dynamometer, swelling by ultrasound, and soreness by a visual analog scale. The primary outcome focuses on changes in isometric biceps strength after 72 hours. Participants' recovery progress and safety will be monitored during this period.
