What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the effect of simple bed exercises on reducing postoperative ileus in patients who have undergone colorectal surgery. The study focuses on patients who have completed elective colorectal surgery and are experiencing postoperative ileus. This randomized controlled trial seeks to understand if these exercises can help improve bowel function after surgery compared to standard usual care. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Group 1 will receive education and guidance to perform simple bed exercises involving deep breathing, knee pulls towards the chest, and body turns while lying on the bed. They will perform these exercises for 15 minutes, three times a day starting from the first day after surgery until they pass their first stool. A surgical nurse will teach and support the exercises using a video. Group 2 will receive standard usual care without these exercises. Throughout the study, all participants will record their bowel movements, passing of gas, and tolerance to oral intake three times daily in a logbook. Clinical records and follow-up appointments will also be reviewed. The main outcome measured is the time from surgery until the first defecation, with secondary outcomes including time to first flatus and tolerance to oral diet. The study will monitor participants for up to 15 days after surgery.
