What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating a peer support and community resource navigation program called Sisters for Heart Health to improve psychological well-being and reduce heart-related risks among rural, low-income farmworker women aged 18 to 50 years. This study focuses on whether the intervention can lower stress, social isolation, and psychological distress by enhancing social support and access to resources. It also aims to assess improvements in cardiometabolic health using the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score. Participants are randomly assigned to either the Sisters for Heart Health intervention or a Basic intervention. The Sisters for Heart Health program includes ten weekly in-person peer support group sessions led by trained community health workers, covering stress management and heart health education. Community health workers also provide personalized support through resource navigation. The Basic intervention offers participants assessment results of their LE8 health metrics, educational materials on stress management, and information about local health resources. After three months, those in the Basic group may choose to join the Sisters for Heart Health program. During the study, participants will have their cardiometabolic health assessed at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and between 7 to 9 months. Researchers will measure changes in diet, physical activity, sleep, nicotine use, body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. They will also evaluate social isolation, stress, trauma exposure, and participant satisfaction. The total involvement includes regular assessments and surveys to track health and psychosocial outcomes over several months.
