What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying ways to improve patient-centered care for children with acute kidney injury (AKI) to reduce the negative health effects linked to this condition. The study focuses on understanding the challenges and helpful factors in managing pediatric AKI by gathering feedback from both families and healthcare providers. This information will be used to adapt an existing educational tool originally designed for adults to better suit children with AKI. The study has three parts: first, conducting interviews with families and providers to identify barriers and facilitators; second, modifying and testing the usability of the educational tool on an iPad; and third, pilot testing the tool's impact on patient knowledge. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either the educational tool plus usual care or usual care alone after an initial knowledge assessment. Participants aged 1 to 18 years diagnosed with AKI while hospitalized will be involved. Their AKI knowledge will be assessed at the start and again one month later. The study includes interviews, tool usage, and usual care monitoring without masking. The entire process is designed to evaluate the educational tool's effectiveness in improving understanding and management of AKI in children, with the study continuing until June 2026.
