What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating how to help cancer survivors maintain physical activity after completing a community-based exercise oncology program. The study focuses on developing an adaptive intervention to support long-term exercise habits. It aims to understand if the intervention is feasible and acceptable, and to see how well survivors meet exercise guidelines six months after finishing the initial program. Participants first join a supervised exercise program that includes group aerobic and resistance sessions twice a week, plus three behavior change discussion sessions. After completing this program, they enter a three-month period without active intervention to live freely. Based on their physical activity at three months, participants are grouped as "Responders" or "Incomplete Responders". They are then randomly assigned to different maintenance interventions, including no further intervention, monthly behavior change sessions, or a combination of monthly sessions plus bi-weekly exercise classes. Throughout the study, physical activity is measured at several points: baseline, after the exercise program, three months post-program, and six months post-program. Researchers also assess quality of life and physical fitness, including aerobic capacity and muscular strength. The study includes surveys, focus groups, and interviews to gather feedback on intervention feasibility, implementation, and sustainability. Overall participation spans the initial program plus up to six months of follow-up.

Duration - 8 to 12 weeks

Participants complete a community-based, group supervised aerobic and resistance exercise program held twice weekly, including three physical activity behavior change discussion sessions.

Twice weekly exercise sessions and 3 behavior change discussion sessions

Free-Living Follow-up

Duration - 3 months

Participants maintain physical activity levels independently with no active intervention during this period.

No scheduled visits or sessions

Adaptive Physical Activity Maintenance Intervention

Duration - 3 months

Participants are randomized based on physical activity response to receive either monthly behavior change discussion sessions alone or combined with bi-weekly exercise sessions to support maintenance of physical activity.

Monthly behavior change discussion sessions (3 total); bi-weekly exercise sessions for some participants (up to 6 sessions)

Post-Intervention Monitoring

Duration - Up to 6 months after initial exercise program

Participants are assessed for physical activity maintenance and related outcomes up to six months after the initial exercise program completion.
