Investigation of the Effect of Three Dimensional Virtual Reconstruction (3D) on Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Learning Curve in Specialist Training

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating how a three-dimensional (3D) imaging technique affects the learning process for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) during specialist training. This study focuses on patients with kidney stones larger than 2 cm who require PCNL, aiming to understand if 3D imaging helps improve surgical outcomes compared to standard PCNL methods. Participants will be randomly assigned to either receive PCNL using the 3D imaging technique or standard PCNL without this imaging. The 3D imaging technique helps surgeons plan the best access route to the kidney stone by providing a detailed virtual reconstruction, which may reduce the learning curve for new surgeons. The study is double-blinded to reduce bias and compares outcomes immediately after surgery and one month later. During the study, researchers will monitor several important outcomes including the number of participants experiencing bleeding or complications during or immediately after surgery, how many are stone-free one month post-surgery, and the length of hospital stay after the procedure. The study involves regular assessments and follow-ups to track these outcomes, with all care and evaluations provided as part of the trial period ending in October 2025.
