What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how time-restricted eating TRE could improve kidney health in adults with type 2 diabetes who have increased protein in their urine, a condition called microalbuminuria. This condition signals early kidney damage and higher cardiovascular risk. The study is a phase 1, single-group intervention aiming to see if TRE can lower microalbuminuria levels, measured by the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio uACR, without relying on timed urine collections. Participants will follow a consistent eating schedule, restricting food intake to an 8-10 hour window daily for twelve weeks while continuing their usual diabetes treatment. They will also receive standard health and nutrition guidelines, track their food intake using a smartphone app, and wear a continuous glucose monitor during the first and last two weeks of the trial. This behavioral approach is non-invasive and accessible, making it a promising method to manage microalbuminuria and related health issues. During the study, participants will be monitored at baseline and after three months with various assessments including uACR, glucose regulation via continuous glucose monitoring and fasting glucose tests, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and quality of life questionnaires. Additional evaluations of sleep quality and microvascular health through skin capillary measurements will also be conducted. These comprehensive assessments will help determine the impact of TRE on kidney function and overall health over the study period.
