University of North Carolina Pleural Fluid Registry for Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, and Lung Infection

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are collecting biospecimens such as blood, tissue, or body fluids from patients with known or suspected lung cancer, breast cancer, or lung infections. The study aims to create a pleural fluid registry that can be used in future research to better understand diseases, improve tests, and develop new treatments. This observational study is sponsored by the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and focuses on patients with pleural fluid buildup related to these conditions. Participants include both inpatients and outpatients who have pleural fluid requiring clinically indicated drainage due to infection or malignancy. The registry will gather samples and data over a long period, with the primary outcome being the creation of this pleural fluid registry, planned to last 32 years. No specific treatments or interventions are assigned, as this is an observational study. During the study, participant involvement includes undergoing pleural fluid drainage as part of their clinical care. Researchers will collect and store the pleural fluid and other related biospecimens for future study. There are no additional treatments or experimental procedures, and participant safety is monitored through standard clinical care. The total participation duration varies depending on each patient's clinical situation and ongoing data collection over the study period.
