What this Trial Is About

Young individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) often face challenges maintaining healthy habits, especially in physical activity and nutrition, which can lead to increased health risks like obesity and metabolic syndrome. This research aims to evaluate a mobile health (mHealth) intervention designed to improve physical activity and dietary habits in adolescents and young adults with ID, including those with Down syndrome and autism. The study uses a randomized controlled trial (RCT) approach to address gaps in current knowledge and improve lifestyle behaviors in this population. The intervention involves an 8-week program delivered through a specially developed mobile app called IDHEApp, which includes gamification to motivate users. Participants in the experimental group receive daily personalized behavioral challenges focused on increasing physical activity, reducing sedentary time, and improving diet. Both experimental and control groups wear a Fitbit Versa 3 smartwatch to track physical activity and sedentary behavior, but only the experimental group receives the app's challenges. The control group continues their usual routines without additional support. Participants will be assessed throughout the 8-week intervention period using objective measures such as daily step count, light activity, sitting time, total sleep time, and sleep quality. Questionnaires evaluating physical activity and health-related quality of life will also be used. The study involves monitoring adherence and behavior changes using the smartwatch data and app interaction. This trial seeks to provide insights into the effectiveness of digital tools for promoting healthy lifestyles in young people with intellectual disabilities.
