What this Trial Is About
This research aims to evaluate how well a virtual community health educator (vCHE) can increase referrals to cancer clinical trials among patients diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers. The study addresses the issue of low enrollment from underrepresented and underserved groups in cancer trials, which affects the development and application of interventions. Virtual community health educators are designed to offer personalized, culturally and linguistically tailored support similar to real community health workers, communicating in English or Spanish and representing diverse backgrounds. Participants are divided into two groups. One group receives information about cancer clinical trials through the ALEX Research Portal combined with the virtual community health educator over a 20- to 30-minute session. The other group receives similar information via online text. The study compares these two methods for delivering trial information and encouraging referrals. During the study, researchers will measure the proportion of referrals made to cancer clinical trials and the number of patient referrals sent by healthcare providers using the ALEX portal within up to three months. Participants include cancer patients and their caregivers, who will be assessed for eligibility and monitored for their engagement with the provided resources. The study is randomized without masking and will run until August 2027.
