What this Trial Is About
Researchers are exploring how yoga impacts body image and eating behaviors among young women who often experience dissatisfaction with their bodies. This project aims to improve understanding by using quantitative methods to study both positive and negative aspects of body image, as well as to identify psychological factors such as interoceptive awareness, embodiment, self-compassion, and reduced self-objectification that may explain yoga's effects. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group will attend weekly one-hour yoga classes based on the Iyengar method, which emphasizes body alignment and uses props to make poses accessible, led by an experienced instructor. The other group will participate in weekly one-hour total body classes led by a kinesiology specialist focusing on preventive and adapted physical activities. Both programs last 10 weeks and are designed for beginners. During the study, participants will be assessed on outcomes including negative body image, body appreciation, functionality appreciation, eating behaviors, and risk of developing eating disorders. Secondary measures will evaluate embodiment, interoceptive awareness, and self-compassion. These evaluations will take place at the 10-week mark. The study includes healthy women aged 18 to 35, and takes place from November 2024 through July 2026.
