Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening in Black and Underserved Communities in Phoenix Using Free Home FIT Testing, Education, and Patient Support

Researchers are evaluating ways to reduce disparities in colorectal cancer prevention and screening among Black and underserved communities in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Black community experiences the highest colorectal cancer rates among racial and ethnic groups in the United States, largely due to socioeconomic factors and limited healthcare access. This study aims to improve access to screening and follow-up care through community outreach and education. Participants receive free home-based fecal immunochemical tests FIT along with education about colorectal cancer screening. They collect stool samples at home and mail them to the Mayo Clinic Lab for analysis. Participants also complete a questionnaire regarding their colorectal cancer screening history and healthcare experiences. Those with positive FIT results receive follow-up support from a patient navigator and consultation with a gastroenterologist to discuss next steps. During the study, participants with positive test results are contacted again at 2 and 4 weeks after initial outreach to ensure appropriate follow-up care. Researchers measure colorectal cancer disparities among people of color and minority populations throughout the study. The total duration includes screening, education, sample collection, result communication, navigation support, and follow-up, with outcomes reviewed up to 30 days after study completion.
