Randomized Trial of a Culturally Tailored Digital Smoking Cessation Program for American Indian Adults

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of a culturally tailored digital smoking cessation program specifically designed for American Indian and Alaska Native persons who smoke. This randomized controlled trial compares this culturally aligned resource to a general audience digital smoking cessation program. The study aims to support smoking cessation and prevent tobacco use among this specific population through tailored digital messaging. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups one receiving a culturally tailored text message program and the other receiving a standard text message smoking cessation program. Both programs provide free, 247 support with encouragement, advice, and tips to help participants quit smoking. Participants will use their assigned program for six months. During the study, participants will complete surveys at the start and at 1, 3, and 6 months, answering questions about their use of the program and smoking habits. Carbon monoxide levels in exhaled breath will be measured at 1, 3, and 6 months using a device called the iCO Smokerlyzer. The main outcome measured is the percentage of participants who achieve confirmed abstinence from combustible tobacco products at 6 months. Other outcomes include various measures of abstinence, quit attempts, tobacco product use, and dependence over the study period.
